Britain’s reliance on gas boilers is a ‘critical national security risk’, according to a report by the independent climate change thinktank E3G and the Kings College Department of War Studies. 85 per cent of homes need gas for heating, with the country also reliant on just four gas terminals and processing plants for its supply, making this highly vulnerable to attack.
‘The UK cannot militarize itself out of insecurity. A new security strategy must address the sources of insecurity, starting with fossil fuel dependence,’ says Pauline Heinrichs, one of the report’s authors. ‘Fossil fuels drive up energy and food bills during crises, increase inequality and expose the UK to direct impacts from climate change.’
