A campfire smokes on the fringes of the Melbourne Botanical Gardens, tents and vans pitched around it. From this site, named ‘King’s Domain’ by settler Australia and recently declared ‘Camp Sovereignty’, Krautungalung elder and activist Robbie Thorpe has this year been building a genocide case for prosecution against King Charles III himself.
‘Australia remains a crime scene,’ Thorpe told the Victorian Supreme Court in July, pointing to the fact that First Nations people never ceded sovereignty to the Crown. ‘It’s a shameful situation.’
