In two separate incidents within the space of 12 hours, on 30 March 2025, the Montreal Police Service (SPVM) shot dead two unarmed men, sparking a wave of angry protests.
An unidentified man was first killed in the Ville-Marie area of the city as the police responded to a reported firearm. Later, during a crisis intervention visit at his Saint-Michel apartment, 29-year-old Abisay Cruz was shot and subsequently died in hospital.
