At least 32 people are dead after a bridge collapsed at a mine in southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The mine, in Lualaba, has been at the center of a dispute between wildcat striking miners and the site’s operators. The DRC is
the world’s largest exporter of cobalt, a key ingredient in lithium-ion batteries.
Indigenous protesters took actions at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil, blocking the entrance to the event and demanding the government end extractive projects on their territories. More than 200 human rights and environmental groups later wrote an open letter accusing the UN climate chief Simon Stiell of escalating a state crackdown on Indigenous people at the talks.
