A few months ago my neighbour, who is a part-time DJ, threw a ‘rent party’ because she was unable to pay her rent. She invited friends and community members and asked for donations at the door. Although I struggle from paycheck to paycheck, I was keen to help a person in need, and donated what I could. Afterward, she let us all know she was able to pay her rent.
But over the last few weeks I’ve noticed a cleaner arriving at her flat. I can’t help but feel resentful, seeing the money I and others donated being spent on employing a cleaner, which I see as an unnecessary and luxurious expense. I almost want to ask for my money back. Am I in the right here, or should I mind my own business?
