For years I’ve dreamed of being able to move into my own home with a garden so I can get my very own cat. But the idea now comes with increasing guilt. Keeping a feline friend indoors feels cruel, and seems to impact their physical and mental health. But owning an outdoor cat is now seen by many as ecologically disastrous. Estimates put the number of birds and other mammals killed by domestic cats worldwide as high as the billions, and they have contributed to extinctions. They aren’t wildlife – is there an ethical way to own one, or should I never get one at all?
