It was unthinkable, but the people of Argentina did it. Hundreds of thousands of people taking to the streets, and posting online, have won an important concession from Javier Milei’s far-right government.
On 7 August the Senate removed two central aspects of a controversial Private Property Rights reform bill after a massive campaign of public protest against it. The first would have expanded the amount of land that can be purchased by people from outside of Argentina from 15 to 25 per cent of the country’s territory. The other prevented looser usage restrictions on land burned by wildfires.
