US state Utah is set to eradicate homelessness by 2015. Its Housing First programme, which gives apartments and caseworkers to rough sleepers to encourage self-sufficiency, has reduced the number of people on the streets by nearly 80 per cent in eight years. The city has seen prison and healthcare bills drop by a third, making this an economical and a progressive solution for a Republican state.
The country that sparked the ‘Arab Spring’ three years ago has a new constitution that recognizes equality between men and women for the first time. In January, Tunisia’s parliament passed the text, which is praised as one of the most democratic in the Arab world and guarantees Tunisians freedom of worship, by 200 votes.
