Burma’s saffron-clad monks won the world’s sympathy when they spilled onto the streets of Rangoon demanding a return to democracy in 2007. But today, with the country on a rocky road to reform, some of its monks have found a new target: Muslims.
A group of ultra-nationalist monks in Burma is now aggressively lobbying for a law that would effectively ban Buddhist women from marrying Muslim men. Drafted last February, it would require women to seek permission from their families and local authorities before marrying a man of a different faith.
