For over 14 years the residents of Los Caimanes have fought against Latin America’s largest tailings dam, constructed by mining transnational Antofagasta Minerals’ subsidiary, Minera Los Pelambres (MLP).
Declared illegal before it was even built, the tailings dam dried and polluted the valley. It left no clean water for consumption or agriculture. Residents’ objections brought them into conflict with the Luksic brothers, whose business empire, which includes finance, transport and telecommunications as well as mining, took root during the Pinochet dictatorship.
