The Museum of Black Civilizations has opened in Dakar yet many of its galleries remain empty.
In December 2018, the Museum of Black Civilizations opened in Dakar, 52 years after it was proposed by Senegal’s first president.
The four-storey Chinese-funded circular structure – inspired by traditional Senegalese homes – is so vast that people say it has changed the capital’s skyline. Spread over 14,000 square metres, it has space for some 18,000 artworks. Yet, for now, many of its galleries stand empty.
