A new generation of Sahrawi activists are using digital media to advance their struggle for independence in Moroccan-occupied Western Sahara. Among them is 31-year-old Sidahmed Jouly, the host and producer of El Shawr – a YouTube channel that targets Arab audiences to address misconceptions and raise awareness of the movement.
‘There is a lot of misinformation and fake news on YouTube about our struggle, especially in Arabic,’ says Jouly, who lives in the Sahrawi refugee camps of Tindouf, Algeria, where he was born and raised. ‘Many Arab audiences think that the Western Sahara struggle is a secession case and not an occupation case.’
