As costs rise across the world, so does the rage. From Sri Lanka to Kazakhstan, Taiwan to Tunisia, the anger has spilled onto the streets as people demand economic justice, despite often being met with state violence. We can expect plenty more of this, and a rise in union activism, as governments fail to protect citizens from the impacts of massive price hikes – so says the 2022 State of Civil Society Report published by CIVICUS, a global alliance of civil society organizations and activists.
Protests are also evolving to articulate wider demands, including the reversal of detrimental policies like austerity measures, or to demand systemic changes, including change of government. Over 250 million more people are expected to be pushed into poverty in 2022.
