A Nobel Prize-winning journalist has been acquitted of tax evasion charges, which she says were trumped up in a bid to muzzle press freedom. Maria Ressa co-founded Filipino news outlet Rappler and won the gong in 2021 for her work to ‘safeguard freedom of expression’.
Rappler reported extensively on former president Rodrigo Duterte’s violent war on drugs, and Ressa faced a string of civil and criminal charges from 2018. ‘Today, facts win, truth wins, justice wins,’ she said after the ruling.
