As a bill to abolish capital punishment gains momentum, Zimbabwe faces a critical moment in its history. Wallace Mawire reports.
Stakes are high for capital punishment in Zimbabwe with a death penalty abolition bill in motion. Although Zimbabwe hasn’t carried out an execution – typically by hanging – since 2005, the sentence continues to be imposed. Some 63 prisoners are currently on death row.
Polls indicate that the majority of Zimbabweans oppose the death penalty, including the country’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who escaped the gallows during the country’s war of liberation.
