Envisioning an explosive shell spreading life as well as death, in 2017 the US Department of Defence issued a call for ‘seed-sprouting bullets’. Though this particular tech-fantasy never came to fruition, it was aimed at mitigating the environmental destruction reaped by military training activities, such as groundwater lead poisoning from the millions of munitions fired yearly.1
