The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) calls it the world’s ‘hidden tragedy’. every year, families are divided by war, natural disaster, trafficking or political violence. In the chaos that follows, children get lost, the injured are left behind and soldiers and civilians are ‘disappeared’ or detained.
The right to know the whereabouts of family members is enshrined in international law. Until the fate of a loved one is known, families cannot mourn lost relatives or find closure. With little support for their search, they become silent victims.
