Kashmiri women are taking on the state in the courtrooms for the first time, using social media to counter intimidation.
On 22 June, women from Kunan and Poshpora, two adjoining villages in north Kashmir, spoke out at a public meeting in Srinagar. Their story, of suffering mass sexual assault by Indian army troops 22 years ago and their struggle for justice, has been told many times. But this telling was different. Buoyed by a recent judicial order for a fresh investigation, and with the support of civil society, the women are ready to step up the fight.
