Over 1,100 people died when the Rana Plaza building in Dhaka, Bangladesh, collapsed last April. Thousands were injured and more than 40 people left disabled by the loss of limbs. Over 180 survivors of the building collapse – considered the deadliest in modern history – may develop long-term disabilities, swelling the ranks of an estimated 16 million people living with disabilities in Bangladesh today.
To free those trapped under the rubble of the eight-storey building, rescue workers had to use butcher knives or hacksaws to amputate many hands and legs, often without anaesthesia.
