As he marks his eightieth year, Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado reflects with Graeme Green on an illustrious career documenting some of the rawest moments of life on Earth.
Sebastião Salgado didn’t become one of the world’s most renowned photographers without sacrifice.
‘Your family is important, your friends are important, your comfort is important. But your pictures must be more important,’ he says, speaking from his Paris studio. ‘I had to have the courage to stay. Sometimes it’s very hard. Today, you don’t get your pictures. Tomorrow, you don’t get your pictures... You must insist and persist. I believed in that all my life.’
