On 25 April 2013, Kholoud Sukkarieh and Nidal Darwiche became the first couple in Lebanon’s history to have an approved civil marriage.
Like most Arab states, Lebanon does not have civil laws for marriage, divorce, inheritance and child custody; 18 officially recognized religious sects reign over such personal affairs. Until last year, couples wanting a civil marriage had to go abroad. Now, Lebanon is undergoing a silent constitutional revolution.
