Though the Western media have been covering the outbreak of Ebola in West Africa for months, something changed in mid-September. The diagnosis of the first Ebola patient on US soil signalled a significant shift in how we perceive this particular tropical disease.
No longer relegated to a distant ‘West Africa’, Ebola became something ordinary Americans could catch, potentially as easily as the common cold.
