The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has banned Coca-Cola products from its events and facilities, recommending that schools throughout the country follow their lead. The move is a response to Coca-Cola’s appalling child labour and human rights record, substantially evidenced in the media. This will affect the 1.8 million members of the AFT, although the National Education Association (NEA) is still failing to take a stand on the matter.
For more than two years, a Dubai-based company has had its eye fixed on securing a luxury hunting and safari ground on 1,500 square kilometres of land just outside Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. The project threatened to relocate 40,000 Masai herders forcibly, with the Tanzanian government suspected of back-channelling the deal. After an international outcry, President Jakaya Kikwete tweeted a pledge never to evict the Masai people – though it has yet to be put in writing.
