Nepalese park rangers are fighting poachers using drones – not of the targeted assassination variety, but as ‘eyes in the sky’ to help patrols view areas previously out of reach. Wildlife charity WWF is training rangers to use the unpiloted aerial vehicles, which carry cameras over a pre-programmed route, to catch hunters targeting tigers, elephants and other animals.

Move over, Thomas Edison: 13-year-old Kelvin Doe, aka DJ Focus, could steal your thunder. The teenager from Sierra Leone honed his skills turning waste materials into invaluable tools such as battery lights and radio transmitters. Doe is now the youngest person to attend the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a ‘visiting practitioner’. He wants to use his skills to build a wind turbine and a public radio station for his community.
