The amount of fossil fuels extracted currently is orders of magnitude higher than the amount of minerals required for clean energy technologies. Unless fossil fuel extraction is curtailed, this will remain the case even taking into account an expected expansion in transition mineral demand over the coming decades: a fourfold increase, some predict, with almost half of this required for electric vehicles.
One of the simplest ways to minimize transition mineral requirements is to shift away from private cars to high-quality public transport and active travel such as walking and cycling.
