It’s been 23 years since Eritrean-Swedish journalist Dawit Isaak was arbitrarily detained. He was working at Eritrea’s first independent newspaper Setit when he was arrested over the publication of an open letter calling for democratic reform.
Along with at least 10 other independent journalists, Isaak was denied access to family, consular assistance and a lawyer. That was in 2001 and he and his colleagues – some of whom have since died in prison – have become the longest known detained journalists in the world. Isaak has never been charged with a crime.
