As US sanctions deepen Cuba’s energy crisis, international activists are attempting to deliver aid and challenge the decades-long blockade. By Maxine Betteridge-Moes.
A group of grassroots activists sailed to Cuba from Mexico in March, delivering more than 35 tonnes of vital humanitarian aid and supplies to the energy-starved country.
‘Total grid failure happened while we were there,’ said James Schneider, communications director for Progressive International, which launched the Nuestra America Flotilla in February. ‘No other people on Earth have faced so many hurdles trying to pursue quite basic state functions. And they’ve managed to keep on going.’
