As Barat Ali Batoor attempted a perilous boat trip from Indonesia to Australia, along with 90 other Hazara refugees, he thought he was documenting his own death at sea.
Batoor had no choice but to leave his homeland. After his story ‘Dancing boys of Kabul’, about Afghan warlords who prostitute teenage boys for sexual entertainment, was published in the Washington Post in 2012, he received anonymous death threats.
