On 12 October Morales was re-elected President of Bolivia for an unprecedented third term, with just over 60 per cent of the vote. His success is proof (if any were needed) that Latin America’s swing to the Left has both popular roots and staying power.
Unlike closer electoral contests testing the continent’s ‘pink tide’ in countries like Venezuela and Brazil, the Bolivian Right proved a divided and dispirited opponent. A greater challenge for the continent’s only indigenous President was to ensure his party had the 50 per cent of women candidates stipulated by its 2009 constitution.
