The Abortion Bill, passed by the Spanish government late last year, turned the clock back 30 years for women’s rights. It also raises serious questions about the ties between the Catholic Church and the conservative People’s Party (Partido Popular – PP).
The PP has an absolute majority in Parliament, and is using this to make wide-ranging changes to the structure of Spanish society. But at least people voted for the PP; they never elected the Bishops’ Conference. The Catholic Church now appears to wield more influence on policy than any other Spanish organization.
