I thought this trip was going to be disaster. My flight was cancelled, twice, then confirmed on a different day from the original schedule – and the friend I was travelling with was promptly booked onto a different flight, leaving Bangui a week later! She and I howled with rage, but could do nothing.
So I boarded the small UN plane alone – the only domestic flights in the Central African Republic (CAR) are a small fleet of UN planes carrying aid workers and the occasional writer. Several hours later, I landed in the extreme southeast of the country, just outside a town called Obo. The pilot told us the local phone network was down.
