‘There is no prejudice now,’ says Pedro – also known as ‘Peter’. His dyed blond hair, necklace and amethyst amulet, colour co-ordinated shirt and cap, and generally expressive style, leave little room for doubt. ‘Everybody knows I’m gay. I don’t hide it. If some people don’t like it, too bad. But most people are fine. They don’t avoid me.’
On the contrary, I find, sitting with Pedro on Plaza Vigia in the once grand but now shabby and neglected northern city of Matanzas. People of all kinds keep coming up to him for a chat.
