Now 25, Anami Daudi Toure has lived in Mukuru kwa Njenga informal settlement since he was 5. Until last year, Mukuru was home to over 100,000 people – but a wave of mass evictions between October and December 2021 displaced tens of thousands of them.
Mukuru kwa Njenga has been settled since the 1950s. But with its prime location, just minutes from the high-rise apartments of upmarket Nairobi and conveniently placed between the international airport and the central business district, there have been many eviction threats over the years.
